Inter Milan vice-president Javier Zanetti doesn’t rule out a move for Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee in the summer.

The 22-year-old has been one of the standout stars in Serie A this season, spearheading the Rossoblu’s charge towards a historic Champions League qualification.

The Dutchman has several admirers between Italy and abroad. Yesterday, a report claimed AC Milan and Juventus are dueling for his signature, while the Nerazzurri are lagging behind.

Nevertheless, Zanetti teases a move for Zirkzee, revealing that the Italian champions would attempt to sign the young striker if the right circumstances present themselves.

“Zirkzee is a great player. He’s Young, talented, and intelligent. He’s also Physically strong,” said the 50-year-old in an interview with Radio TV Serie A via FcInterNews.

“Joshua is doing very well. We’re talking about a player that would be useful to anyone aiming for important goals.

“Let’s see. If the opportunity arises we can think about it. With Zirkzee, Lautaro and Thuram we would have a young and strong attack. They would give us peace of mind.”

The iconic former Inter captain also discussed the second star and what it means to him personally.

“It occupies an important, emotional place for me. I was moved when I saw so many people waiting for the Italian champions on the streets.

“Hearing the choir and feeling the enthusiasm of the Nerazzurri people was incredible. I saw families, children, and everyone was so emotional.

“The second star is one of the most important pages in the club’s history. The boys did something extraordinary. Now I always say that Inter is my family and we are one.”

“The second star wasn’t an obsession. It’s not part of our values. It was a dream that came true Sunday after Sunday. We never saw the team in difficulty, except during a single match.”

Zanetti also touched on the Derby della Madonnina which saw Inter secure the title with a win over Milan.

“It was a unique and historic event. We took the opportunity, even though we knew it would be complicated because our opponents wanted to avoid it at all costs.

“The boys were extraordinary. Suffering until the end is in our DNA. At the final whistle, we hardly understood what we had achieved.”

Zanetti chose club captain Lautaro Martinez as the face of the championship-winning campaign. He also identifies Marcus Thuram as the most pleasant surprise.

“You could choose many, but I have to say Lautaro was the face of the team. When he scores, he shows you the desire to win.”

“Thuram adapting from the start was a positive surprise. It wasn’t easy for an attacker coming from a different league. But you always see him smiling, happy.

“Pavard as well, but in general, all the new signings were great. Sommer showed personality.

“Frattesi made the difference when coming off the bench. The match against Verona was very difficult. He gave us the winner and then seeing San Siro explode with his ‘fiery’ face was one of the moments in which we realized we were close.

“We knew what these signings could give on the pitch, but they gave a lot off it as well. Frattesi was always decisive when he came on. This means that he felt important and having these players is fundamental.”

Finally, Zanetti spoke briefly about some of the club’s biggest stars.

“Calganolgu was incredible. He has a great personality, and a driving force. He deserved to win in this fashion.

“Mkhitaryan is the brain of the team, a very smart player. You don’t have to explain anything to him, and he’s always generous.

“Barella was extraordinary, he was a leader this season. In both phases, he’s always at the service of his teammate. Fundamental.”

“Dimarco realized his childhood dream. Fede grew up with us, he left and came back a real man. We saw his belonging, how much he cared about winning with this shirt and he did it as a protagonist.”
