Green Bay Packers Legend Doesn’t Hold Back On Aaron Jones’ Release
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur found himself taken aback by the unexpected departure of running back Aaron Jones.

In a report by Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal, LaFleur expressed his surprise at the decision to release Jones, a move that left many Packers fans equally stunned. Given LaFleur’s integral role within the organization, many assumed he would have been involved in discussions regarding such a significant roster change.

Among those expressing surprise was Packers legend Clay Matthews III, who took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the matter.

“With a rookie* QB, young receiving corp and Watson injured, Jones WAS GBs offense. He even took a pay cut to stay with the team in 2023! But I digress. I find the lack of communication between HC and GM to be wild. LaFleur has been one of the most successful coaches and doesn’t have a say!?”

Matthews directed his frustration towards general manager Brian Gutekunst, emphasizing his support for both quarterback Jordan Love and Coach LaFleur.

While Matthews and LaFleur may not have had direct interactions during their respective tenures with the Packers, Matthews’ endorsement of LaFleur underscored the significance of coaching involvement in personnel decisions.

It’s a sentiment that carries weight, as head coaches traditionally have a degree of input in shaping their team’s roster.

The departure of Aaron Jones adds a layer of intrigue to the Green Bay Packers’ running back situation heading into the 2024 season. Gutekunst’s decision will undoubtedly be scrutinized as the team prepares for the challenges ahead.
